Buttercream Rosette Wedding Cake

by caralin, in category buttercream, weddings

Love is in the air this week, as Valentine’s Day will soon be upon us.  That air may be a bit chilly at the moment, but the love I’m currently thinking of reminds me of warmer days of summer.  Specifically, I’m thinking back to this cake I made for a sweet couple who got married on… Read More

Canadiana Moose Cake

by caralin, in category birthdays, buttercream

I make a lot of mousse cakes, but today we have something a bit different – an actual MOOSE cake! As a proud Canadian, I loved making this birthday cake.  The request was for a Canada-themed cake to match the plaid-and-moose adorned invitations, so this was what I came up with!  What could be more classically… Read More

Vintage Pink Ruffle Cake

by caralin, in category buttercream, weddings

Here we go: as promised, here is the second of three cakes I made last weekend!  This vintage-inspired pink wedding shower cake has piped buttercream ruffles and a gumpaste peony.  The top tier is smooth-iced buttercream.  It’s a bit hard to see in the photos, but I dusted the flower with some edible gold lustre dust… Read More

Throwback Thursday: Celtic Football Club Jersey Cake

by caralin, in category birthdays, buttercream, throwback thursdays

So, I originally started this blog several years ago.  Those of you who have been following me since then (thanks, guys!!) know that I sort of fell off the wagon and didn’t post anything for a while (okay, I didn’t post anything for a loooong time), but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t making tasty cakes!  (To… Read More

Happy 50th Birthday!

by caralin, in category birthdays, buttercream

I made this pretty, rustic birthday cake this weekend.   It was a great chance to try out some new rose petal cutters I got – I definitely approve, and I can’t wait to use them again soon!

Chai Latte Rustic Wedding Cake

by caralin, in category buttercream, weddings

I made this lovely rustic wedding cake this weekend. The couple was debating between lemon or chai for the flavour, but knew they wanted a rustic style.  After tasting some samples, the chai won out, so the end result was this chai latte cake with a complementary chai buttercream.  The spices in the icing gave… Read More

Happy Valentine’s Day with Strawberry Ombre Rosettes!

by caralin, in category buttercream, holidays, just because

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!  Whether you’ve got a valentine to snuggle up to today or not, cake is always a good thing to snuggle.  …Well, maybe don’t actually snuggle it – that sounds sticky.  But it’s certainly a good thing to eat! I tried out my pretty new cake stand for the first time today,… Read More

Perfectly Purple Ombre Petals

by caralin, in category birthdays, buttercream

In continuing the theme of buttercream cakes, here is another I did recently! This technique is called petal effect, and the term for the graduated colour is “ombre”.  Sounds fancy, huh?  🙂 What do you think?  Do you prefer this petal effect, or the piped rosette cake I posted last week?  They were both fun… Read More

A Sweet Rosette Birthday

by caralin, in category birthdays, buttercream

I made this pretty rosette cake for a recent birthday.  The piped buttercream rosettes were actually quite quick to do, but I love how they turned out.  So did the birthday girl, actually – so much so that her mom ordered another exactly the same a week later!  (Not that you need an excuse to… Read More

A Fall-Themed Wedding Cake

by caralin, in category buttercream, weddings

Congratulations to Carolyn and Dave!  Here is a look at their fall-themed wedding cake.  This was my first big cake with a buttercream finish (no fondant!), so the smoothing took some time, but I think it turned out well. Dark chocolate cake, white chocolate mousse filling, white chocolate buttercream frosting. Gumpaste leaves.
