Owl Baby Shower Cake

by caralin, in category baby showers

These proud parents-to-be decorated their nursery with owls for the arrival of their little girl, so I designed this baby shower cake to match!  It was a surprise for mom, since dad sent me a picture of the nursery in secret.  It fun to surprise her!

Congratulations again, you two – soon to be you three!!  I can’t wait to meet the little lady!  🙂

A Fall-Themed Wedding Cake

by caralin, in category buttercream, weddings

Congratulations to Carolyn and Dave!  Here is a look at their fall-themed wedding cake.  This was my first big cake with a buttercream finish (no fondant!), so the smoothing took some time, but I think it turned out well.

Dark chocolate cake, white chocolate mousse filling, white chocolate buttercream frosting. Gumpaste leaves.

Welcome Baby – Pink and Blue Teddy Bear Shower Cakes

by caralin, in category baby showers, cupcakes

I made this baby shower cake for one of my wonderful colleagues.  The timing of the shower was pretty impeccable (or very last-minute!), since she started going into labour later that day!  She welcomed a beautiful, healthy little girl.

A few years ago, I made this blue teddy bear cake for the birth of her son, so this time I wanted to make the cake a girly version of the same!

I’ll have to think of another variation on the teddy bear theme next time (if there is a next time… we’ll have to wait and see!).  Congratulations to the happy, healthy family!  🙂

Piggies in the Mud Birthday Cake

by caralin, in category birthdays, carved cakes that look like stuff

This weekend, the son of one of my very best friends turned one!  My friend found this cake online and asked if I could help her replicate it for the party – I said of course I would!  My friend make the cake, I made the piggies, and we assembled it together (after sending her husband into town at 10pm to get more KitKats.  The lesson here is to always err on the side of more chocolate bars!).

We had a great party, and birthday boy Connor had as much fun as a pig in mud!

(and yes, I know a mini-cake would get soggy if you let it float in your mud bath, but I’m going with “willing suspension of disbelief” here if you’re on board with pigs having a birthday party in the first place!  Plus, we’ll assume that they ate it before it had a chance to go soggy – they are pigs, after all.)

Happy 90th Birthday – A Family Tree Cake!

by caralin, in category birthdays

For her 90th birthday, her family wanted to celebrate the thing that was most important to her – her family.  Her granddaughter contacted me to make a cake that captured this theme, so I thought a family tree would be a classic way to do that!

Everyone loves birds…  Especially angry ones!

This birthday cake was for a good friend.  I hope it made him happy instead of angry!

Replica Book Cake – Toronto Book Launch

by caralin, in category 3D sculpted cakes, book, carved cakes that look like stuff, just because

This is the second “book cake” I’ve made, and I’m really having fun with them!  (The first was a replica of Breaking Dawn from the Twilight series.)

I created this book replica cake for the launch of The High Road, the second novel by Toronto author Terry Fallis.  My fiancé used to work with Terry, so I was thrilled to make this cake for him – plus, his books are awesome!  The High Road is a sequel to his first novel, The Best Laid Plans, which won the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour, and I’d be surprised if this one wasn’t a contender too!  In both stories, Terry manages to make the Canadian political scene laugh-out-loud funny.  I was so engrossed in the final few chapters of The Best Laid Plans that not only did I miss my subway stop, it turned out I’d gotten on completely the wrong line!  Oops.  Oh well – the story was great, and totally worth the roundabout route home.   🙂

So, since we can’t actually share this cake with you (it’s long gone by now – sorry!), I highly recommend you check out the books themselves.  Awesome, funny, engrossing stories!  And they look good as a cake.

The cake is dark chocolate with vanilla buttercream.  The fondant was hand-tinted to match the book cover, and all other details are hand-painted with paste food colours (except the cookies – for those, I took a short-cut and used real mini cookies!).

Here’s a shot of Terry cutting his cake!  You can read about his reaction on his blog.  Congrats again, Terry – I can’t wait for your next book!

Get Well Soon!

by caralin, in category get well soon, just because

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the hiatus on cake posting – it’s been a busy time for me recently!

Today’s post is a “Get Well Soon” cake.  John is an avid mountain biker, but he took an unfortunate tumble and smashed his leg in three places.  Ouch!  Well, what better way to make someone feel better than with cake?  After all, the saying is “cake heals all wounds”, isn’t it?  Well, if it’s not a saying already, it should be!

His little toes were fun to sculpt!

Get Well Soon cakeI searched mountain biking magazines online picked “bike” because it was the easiest to fit on my covers – turns out it’s actually John’s favourite magazine, too!

Two Cute Car Cakes

by caralin, in category birthdays

Well, I think they’re cute, at least – and you’ve got to admit that the title is great alliteration, either way.  🙂

I’m still playing catch up on all the cakes I made before I started this blog, so today is a two-cake old/new combo post.  Both are car cakes, so I thought it made sense to show them as a two-in-one!

I’ll start with the earlier cake.  I made this one a few months ago for a coworker’s niece.  The family was having a big party to celebrate her first birthday, and since the birthday girl’s favourite toys are her cars, a big car cake was in order!  The cars are rice krispie treats covered in buttercream and then fondant.

Car birthday cake

…And here is the cake I made just this weekend.  It was for another birthday, for a little boy this time.  Evan is four this year, and he too loves cars and trucks, so another car cake it was!  This time I did one car and one truck, and the cake is covered in all piped buttercream grass instead of fondant.  The road is chocolate fondant on both cakes.

The other little “twist” on this cake is that I did the letters in 3D so they stood out from the front of the cake.  It’s just something a little different, but I thought it was fun!

Celtic Football Club: Team Jersey Cake

by caralin, in category birthdays

My partner is a British man, so I have been conditioned over the years to call the sport with the black and white ball you kick with your feet “FOOTBALL”.  “American football” is the name of the grunty, tight-pants-big-shoulders, ball-that-you-throw-and-carry-and-kick-now-and-then sport.

Okay, I really just call them both football.  I don’t discriminate.

Okay, and sometimes I still do call the foot one “soccer”, but I do admit that “football” makes more sense as a name, and I acknowledge the error of my ways.

I tell you this only because football fans are often very passionate.  They’re passionate about what you call their sport, definitely passionate about the game, and DEFINITELY passionate about their favourite team, which was the inspiration behind this football jersey birthday cake.

Can you guess the birthday boy’s favourite team?  That’s right – the Celtic Football Club.

I guess it must be a family trait, because they’ve now ordered the exact same cake for his mother’s birthday, coming up later in April!  (of course, it won’t say “Happy 30th Daddy”, but let’s not get in to another debate on semantics, shall we?)

🙂
