Replica Book Cake – Toronto Book Launch

This is the second “book cake” I’ve made, and I’m really having fun with them!  (The first was a replica of Breaking Dawn from the Twilight series.)

I created this book replica cake for the launch of The High Road, the second novel by Toronto author Terry Fallis.  My fiancé used to work with Terry, so I was thrilled to make this cake for him – plus, his books are awesome!  The High Road is a sequel to his first novel, The Best Laid Plans, which won the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour, and I’d be surprised if this one wasn’t a contender too!  In both stories, Terry manages to make the Canadian political scene laugh-out-loud funny.  I was so engrossed in the final few chapters of The Best Laid Plans that not only did I miss my subway stop, it turned out I’d gotten on completely the wrong line!  Oops.  Oh well – the story was great, and totally worth the roundabout route home.   🙂

So, since we can’t actually share this cake with you (it’s long gone by now – sorry!), I highly recommend you check out the books themselves.  Awesome, funny, engrossing stories!  And they look good as a cake.

The cake is dark chocolate with vanilla buttercream.  The fondant was hand-tinted to match the book cover, and all other details are hand-painted with paste food colours (except the cookies – for those, I took a short-cut and used real mini cookies!).

Here’s a shot of Terry cutting his cake!  You can read about his reaction on his blog.  Congrats again, Terry – I can’t wait for your next book!

  1. What an extraordinary piece of art this cake was. It nearly broke my heart to cut it. Your work is simply amazing. Long may you bake and decorate cakes…
